Vi i Vesten tenker gjerne at vi er helt i front når det gjelder miljøvern generelt og plast og gjenvinning spesielt. Det stemmer på ett felt, nemlig panteordninger. Her er faktisk Norge og Tomra helt i front i verdenssammenheng. Musikkfestivaler og andre storsamlinger blir stadig mer plastfrie i Nord-Europa, og snart er det ikke råd å få tak i engangsplast. Men hadde det ikke vært for at særlig Kina og andre land i Østen i en årrekke har tatt imot brukt plast fra Vestens husholdninger, hadde Europa og USA slitt med gigantiske plastberg. Nå har Kina fra 2019 takket nei til mer brukt plast fra Vesten. Andre land i Sør-Øst Asia gjør nå etter hvert som Kina, og dermed begynner plastbergene å vokse i et foruroligende tempo i Vesten. Norge har i en årrekke sendt plasten sin til Sverige og Tyskland, som igjen har sendt mesteparten videre til Kina. Nå må rike land i Vesten begynne å ta hånd om sin egen brukte plast, og kanskje er det på tide?
Fattigere land har lenge måttet håndtere sin brukte plast, og det har tvunget fram kreative løsninger. I Colombia bruker de ca 5 tonn med plast for å lage et hus, av blokker som minner om litt forvokste legoklosser. Det kunne vi vel klart i Europa også? Vi har teknologien, og vi har definitivt råvarene. Kanskje er det ikke hus vi skal satse på, men garasjer eller lekestuer i hagen? Lang holdbarhet, null vedlikehold og lav pris. Og lego er jo i tillegg moro å bygge med!
Det som går igjen hos disse entrepenørene og gründerne er at de ser brukt plast som en ressurs og ikke som et problem.
